More detailed information
The vast variety of music in the USA can be traced to the slaves who were brought there against their will from every corner of Africa. The slaves were not able to take anything with them except their inborn traditions and culture.
It was their music which gave them strength in their ordeals as slaves. They danced, sang and played their instruments.
Despite the white race didn´t consider the Africans as equals it is clear that their music greatly influenced the whole world. Their spirituals are the roots of gospel, blues, jazz, rock and everyday music in general.
As a tribute to the African spirituals The Chamber Choir of Hafnarfjördur will be giving a concert where this beautiful music is celebrated. Together with the choir, the jazzsinger, Kristjana Stefánsdóttir, the pianist, Kjartan Valdemarsson, the percussionist, Kristinn Snær Agnarsson and the contrabassplayer, Jón Rafnsson will honour the concert with their contribution.
