Leikfelag Akureyrar is one of the three leading institutions on the Icelandic theatre scene and the only professional theatre company outside of Iceland's capital city. Its history goes back almost a century. The theatre is in the heart of Akureyri in a newly renovated theatre which seats 210 spectators and will open a new studio / black box space early 2006. The company performs regularly in other spaces in Akureyri as well as in Reykjavik.

Through the decades the repertoire has been varied: Classical Icelandic and foreign plays, Icelandic and foreign modern work, children's plays and musicals. Each year the company stages four to seven productions independently or in collaboration with other companies as well as producing numerous shorter performances and programs. The company aims for an even wider collaboration with other companies at home and abroad in the coming years. A great number of new Icelandic writing has been premiered at Leikfelag Akureyrar and its artists regularly work with authors on developing new works.  The size of the permanent ensemble is from four to eleven in addition to a great number of actors contracted on project basis.

Spectators come from the whole of Iceland to see the company's productions which have received numerous awards. In addition to the production side, Leikfelag Akureyrar puts a heavy emphasis on theatre education for children and youngsters and works closely with schools on designing courses and workshops.  Leikfelag Akureyrar is a member of I.T.I. Magnus Geir Thordarson took over as the artistic director of Leikfelag Akureyrar early 2004. He has been at the forefront of Icelandic theatre directors for the last few years.
